A number of years ago, my daughter bought a VR headset. I have to confess that I love playing Beat Saber. For those who have never played, it is a rhythm game where you slash through blocks with light sabers to the beat of a song. I've heard it described as "rhythmic flailing" 🤣 and I do have to be cautious about how I treat my (aging) shoulders when I play.Â
Like most video games, there are multiple difficulty levels. If I attempt "Expert+" mode, I fail almost immediately. The blocks move too fast, the patterns are too complex, and the experience is neither fun nor productive. I do not improve and I get very frustrated. If I dial it back to "Hard", I stay in the flow. I enjoy the game and (here's the kicker!) I see improvements in my skill.
Too many high-achievers are trying to live their daily lives on "Expert+" mode. We try to perform at our peak while surrounded by chaos, running on empty batteries, and paralyzed by the need to give 110% to everything. It is unsustainable. This three-part series provides high leverage strategies to reduce friction and stop playing life on "Expert+ Mode".
If you’re tired of the "Expert+" grind, join me to lower friction and reclaim your momentum by calibrating your environment, body, and mind:
